Health Department Flu Update: 2/11/10

The Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center will be sponsoring free walk-in H1N1 shot clinics at three Lake County churches:

  • Saturday, February 20, 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Shalem Seventh Day Adventist, 1105 Pine St., Waukegan
  • Sunday, February 28, 12:30 p.m.-1:30 p.m., St. Matthews MB Church, 500 S. Genesee, Waukegan
  • Sunday, March 14, 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m., Shiloh Baptist Church, 800 S. Genesee, Waukegan

The Health Department is reminding the public that H1N1 flu is still a threat, even though cases of the illness have diminished. What’s important to remember is that we still have a number of months of flu season ahead of us and we can’t predict whether another wave of H1N1 will impact Lake County. It’s smart to play it safe and get the shot.

The Health Department is urging African Americans to get their H1N1 flu vaccinations. Only 3 percent of those who received the H1N1 vaccine through Department clinics last October were African American. Some studies show that African Americans are at higher risk for hospitalization and death from influenza than the general population. Disparities in underlying medical conditions, such as asthma and diabetes, may contribute to the impact of H1N1 on African American communities.

Appointments still can be made for the Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center H1N1 flu vaccination clinic in Gurnee.
