  • Subject area: Spanish is equivalent of Spanish for heritage speakers 1 at the high school level

    Standards students will be graded on: 

    • 7/8.SP.1 Uses proper pronunciation and intonation

    • 7/8.SP.2 Comprehends and applies key vocabulary terms and written passages

    • 7/8.SP.3 Uses appropriate grammar, punctuation and capitalization

    Essential Questions

    • Can I speak in fluid sentences?

    • Can I spell correctly in Spanish?

    • Can I form grammatically correct sentences in Spanish?

    • Can I understand when others speak to me in Spanish?

    Goals using I can statements:

    • I can  speak, read, and write in Spanish in a novice high  proficiency 

    • I can communicate with other Spanish speakers using introductions and greetings, and continue a conversation using essential conversation questions

    • I can learn Spanish through learning the alphabet, having phonemic awareness, and practicing vocabulary in the following topics: days of the week/months, weather, family, emotions, physical appearance, personality characteristics, clothing, school supplies, food & restaurant, hobbies, and shopping

Unit Sequence

  • Unit 1: Spanish speaking countries  and review (7 weeks) 

    • All 21 spanish speaking countries vs. USA
    • Flags, culture, customs, food, and traditions
    • Grammar: review of the basics: alphabet, numbers, colors, animals, food; present tense

    Unit 2: Structure of the family (4 weeks)

    • Immediate and distant
    • Family tree
    • Grammar:imperfect tense 

    Unit 3: Personal relationships (4 weeks)

    • Friends and community
    • Grammar: preterite, irregular preterites, preterite verbs that change meaning, pronouns after prepositions

    Unit 4: Identity (4 weeks)

    • National and ethnic
    • Grammar: preterite of stem changers; Comparisons: inequality, equality; superlatives

    Unit 5: Social media, technology, and careers (4 weeks) 

    • Professional communication and online etiquette
    • Grammar: preterite v. imperfect, impersonal, adverbs

    Unit 6: Global citizenship (4 weeks) 

    • Service project of choice as a class
    • Grammar: Imperfect review, familiar commands, por vs. para, reciprocal reflexives 

    Unit 7: Art, music, and dance (4 weeks)

    • Art, music, and dance from Spanish Speaking countries
    • Grammar: Formal commands, nosotros commands, review of present and preterite

    Unit 8: Sports (4 weeks)

    • Traditional: baseball, basketball, soccer, football, Track, gymnastics
    • Non-traditional: Lucha libre, judo, kickboxing
    • Review of present and preterite
